Martin Jennings chosen as artist to design the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue
The announcement was made by Baroness Valerie Amos, Chair of the Artist Selection Panel for the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue. She commented that:
"Mary richly deserves to be recognised. People in not just the black community, but in ethnic minority communities generally - will feel very pleased because it's like a real recognition of the contribution that we have made to Britain's history. Britain's history has been diverse for generations and we need to recognise and understand that."
Martin Jennings reaction:
"This is wonderful news. Mary Seacole was a person of extraordinary courage and determination. Her compassion and the warmth of her personality were exemplary. She is a truly inspiring subject for an artist. I look forward to the great challenge of making a monument she would have deserved".
