New Patron and Ambassador appointed
We are delighted to announce, firstly, the appointment of the President of UNISON as a Patron. The current post-holder is Eleanor Smith, a theatre nurse from Birmingham. Secondly, we would also like to welcome Gail Adams, Head of Nursing at UNISON, as an Ambassador to the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal. We will keep you posted about the fantastic plans that UNISON are developing in order to support the Appeal reach the target sum needed to erect the memorial statue.
Comment from Eleanor Smith, President of UNISON
I am thrilled to be a patron for the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal, a campaign close to mine and UNISON's heart.
As a black nurse, I am proud to follow in Mary's footsteps. The care and compassion she showed to soldiers in the Crimean war really is an inspiration to people in the NHS and beyond - it is only right that we support the appeal for her permanent memorial.
As a nurse, I know only too well the huge contribution that black people make to providing healthcare in this country. This statue, in the grounds of St Thomas' hospital, would be a great stride forwards in making sure the contribution of black people to our public services, especially our health care system - is properly marked.
Comment from Gail Adams, Head of Nursing, UNISON
I am immensely proud and privileged to be invited to become an ambassador for the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue campaign. I will work tirelessly to promote this cause & ensure that funds are raised. We will build a home for Mary.
