MSMSA delighted with £1,038.38p donation
On Friday 10th December 2010, Sherlina Thompson, producer and writer presented a cheque at the House of Lords to Lord Soley, Chairman of the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal. The grand sum of £1,038.38p was raised from four performances of her play about Mary Seacole entitled 'For Queen and Country?' They took place in October and November 2010 at the Albany theatre in Deptford and the White Bear theatre in Kennington, London.
Sherlina commented:
"I feel very humbled that my debut as Producer / Writer has enabled me to inform the wider community about Mary Seacole, such a pioneering and instrumental woman. With the funds raised from my recent production 'For Queen and Country?' I am confident that we are definitely a step closer to preserving her legacy".
A huge thank you to Sherlina and to everybody who supported this wonderful fundraising activity in aid of the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal.
The Trustees of the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal are delighted to welcome the following new Ambassadors:
Ambassadors
1. Malorie Blackman, award winning children's author. www.malorieblackman.co.uk.
Malorie's comments on becoming an Ambassador to the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal:
"I am thrilled and honoured to have been asked to become an ambassador for the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal. From the moment I found out about Mary Seacole, I felt she was a true inspiration; a woman who did what she felt was right in spite of the many obstacles and naysayers that got in her way.
What could be more fitting as a tribute to such a great lady than to have a statue erected in her honour before St Thomas' Hospital and looking towards the Houses of Parliament?"
2. Drs Corry and Jeroen Staring-Derks, Mary Seacole researchers www.maryseacole.nl.
Based in Holland Corry and Jeroen have produced a book about Victorian media coverage of Mary Seacole including a collection of reviews of her 1857 autobiography. They have donated them to MSMSA and they are selling well for £5 each.
