New Patron and Ambassador appointed
We are delighted to announce, firstly, the appointment of the President of UNISON as a Patron. The current post-holder is Eleanor Smith, a theatre nurse from Birmingham. Secondly, we would also like to welcome Gail Adams, Head of Nursing at UNISON, as an Ambassador to the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal. We will keep you posted about the fantastic plans that UNISON are developing in order to support the Appeal reach the target sum needed to erect the memorial statue.
When Mary Seacole nursed the sick and wounded on the front line in the Crimea she did not ask for, or expect any reward. She did it for the British troops, who she loved and admired. They responded in equal generosity to the person they called "Mother Seacole".
Mary Seacole was not a person to duck a challenge. She broke the race barrier to win the hearts and minds of the British people. She is a wonderful example of an individual who was determined to make a difference. She did so with the force of her personality and her untiring entrepreneurial spirit. This is why she remains such a powerful role model in today's vibrant and diverse society.
I am asking for your help to repay our debt to Mary: to celebrate her life and achievements by erecting a memorial to her in the grounds of St Thomas' Hospital, London.
The chosen work of art will be an important addition to the vibrant cultural landscape on the South Bank, sited near Westminster Bridge, facing the Houses of Parliament.
With leading international artists already having expressed interest in the project, I am confident that this is an exciting and unique opportunity for benefactors. Please help to make this dream a reality. It is 150 years overdue and it will be an inspiration to Modern Britain.
